Things to keep in mind when writing a letter
What to write:
If you know the child’s interests/hobbies, make a craft related to their interest/hobby, and then write a short note. (You could introduce yourself, tell a brief story, etc)
If you don’t know the child’s interests, then make a nice card that is gender-appropriate, i.e. boys usually don’t appreciate hello kitty stickers, and then write a short note.
DO NOT:
*Do not say “Get Well Soon”, because the children have very serious illnesses and it usually takes a long time for them to get well.
*Do not recommend violent, depressing, inappropriate music or TV Shows.
*Do not give patronizing advice, such as, “You can be happier if you’re just grateful for what you have.” Remember that the children are in very tough situations. Saying things like that doesn’t help, and can be mildly offending.
*Do not say "I look forward to hearing back from you", because the children are not obliged to write back.
*Do not make promises you cannot keep, such as "I'll write again soon." However, if you do plan to write again soon, feel free to say that :)
