I am Tiffany Wong, and am from Hong Kong. I am a really dedicated and passionate Beatles fan, and I’ve been a fan of them since 2nd grade. In my free time I like to read and write stories and novels. My other interests are swimming and running, and recently, Pop Pilates as well.
I joined MACS because although I’ve been to only a few orphanage trips in China, I have felt how much the orphans and children in China need our care. We really are very lucky, and I’d like to share our care to make them feel privileged too. Other reasons are that I like to be with kids, and I like helping people. Helping people makes me happy.
I’ve been participating actively in MACS, in writing, many times more than two letters each month, going to workshops, visiting the heeling home and helped out at the International Fair. There are numerous things I like about MACS, but one thing I especially like is how now we have workshops with the theme of the month. I think it really creates the mood and makes writing letters fun and interesting.

My name is Bhaavya Srivastava and I'm a junior. I like to read, write, muck about on the internet, listen to music, and watch my favorite sport, ice hockey. I joined MACS because it seemed like a very interactive and dedicated club, which could be a lot of fun to be in. So far, it's been exactly that and it's one of my favorite clubs here. One of my favorite parts is definitely the workshops - it's a lot of fun to get together with everyone and make children smile! :)

I joined MACS because making others smile brings a smile to my own face. I love spending time with kids and helping those who are less fortunate than me. I have visited the orphanage once, and I have decided to donate 2000 RMB to the orphanage. I love the enthusiasm and passion of all the student officers. Meetings every Monday make me smile, even before I get to visit the kids at the orphanage.

Hello, my name is Michelle Xu and I am a junior. I like sunflowers and peanut-butter and traveling and books and people and old films and weekend brunches. I joined MACS last year when we didn’t have the orphanage trips yet because I love kids and I love to make things so this is a wonderful club for me. The orphanage trips are great additions to the club and they’re definitely one of my favorite parts of MACS. The workshops, like many other members have mentioned, are also great because they give us an extra push to finish our letters on time (and plus they’re really cute and I love the themes). I’m proud to say that I’m a part of MACS even though I can never make it to Monday meetings (I’m sorry) because of the happiness we bring to kids all over the world.

Hello, my name is Marilyn. I like to eat, sleep, and watch TV! I joined this club because I’d heard about it last year and immediately thought it was really interesting how it was community service through letter writing. I only came to joining the club in the beginning of this year, my junior year. I really like this club because it is really enjoyable to reach out to others in writing and to draw things relating to children’s interests. So far, writing letters every month and participating in the workshops, I have had a lot of fun.

Yeon Jae Kim Co-President

Hello! I’m Yeon Jae and I am currently a junior at SAS Puxi. I love music, books, singing, cozy cafés, traveling, playing the violin, and people. I have been involved with Make A Child Smile since I was a sophomore, and I am proud to say that I was able to watch this project grow and develop into what Make A Child Smile is today. I joined MACS because I love how we not only form close bonds with the children who we help and sponsor in our local community, but also reach out to the children around the world through letter writing. It’s been an honor to lead Make A Child Smile this year. It goes unsaid how happy I am to see people excited for MACS, especially for the children at the orphanage, and workshops that I came up with and host every month. Lets keep on bringing happiness to the children all over the world, because though it may only be gradual, we are making a difference.

Soo Min Lee Vice President

Hi! My name is Soo Min and I like track, music, my family and my friends. I have been in Make a Child Smile since 10th grade. I like writing letters to children around the world so I joined this club. I have been to two orphanage trips so far, and I loved it!! I love the kids because they are so adorable and sweet. MACS has really achieved a lot this year and is doing a lot more than what it had been doing last year. I like that we started doing workshops after school because I can make pretty letters for the children with cool crafts that I do not have at home. The atmosphere of the workshop is really nice with Connie’s cute Disney songs playing in the background ☺ because everyone is working hard and concentrating on making cards and writing letters. It is very productive. MACS is one of my favorite clubs because the workshops and orphanages make it meaningful!

Hi, my name is WooHea and I am a junior. This is my fifth year at SAS and second year in MACS. The two most important things in my life that I wouldn't be able to survive without are watching movies and traveling. I watch movies to reduce stress and it is by far the most effective stress relieving method for me. I loved traveling since I was a little kid and so I have been traveling to different parts of the world at every opportunity. The most beautiful place that I've ever been to is Hallstatt, Austria, which is the place that I dream of living in the future. I joined MACS last year because I was intrigued by writing letters to sick children who really need motivation and support. Now that I've been writing letters to the same kids from last year, I feel like I have a strong bond with the kids even though they don't reply to me. Going to orphanage is another thing that MACS started this year because we used to go to healing home last year. Again, I formed this strong bond with a couple of kids in the orphanage after visiting them several times. I know that other members of our club who have been visiting orphanage have formed the same strong bond as I did, so I'd like to tell other members who haven't been to the orphanage that once they get to know the kids well, it's hard not to care. I think our club is really making a difference in our community because donating 4000RMB every month is not 'trivial High School club' thing. We're making kids like Han Mu and Xiao Xue's lives much more hopeful and happy!! :)

Joanna Hu Secretary

Hi, my name is Joanna Hu and I’m a freshman. Some of my interests include ice-skating, photography, and playing piano. The main reason why I joined MACS is that this club gives me the opportunity to help others, which is something that I love to do. Specifically, it allows me to help children, and I love kids! Since I joined this club, I have put a lot of time, effort, and love into the letters I write and decorate for the kids. I have also helped out at the MACS booths at international fair, and become secretary of the club. As secretary, I take attendance, send reminder emails, and complete all the tasks that the other officers ask me to. One of the things that I like most about MACS are the workshops, because they are super fun and productive! Lastly, I like MACS because it’s taught me that even a small gesture (sending letters to kids with diseases) can have a huge impact (bringing them joy).

Hi, I’m Lily. I’m a junior and there are too many things that I like to even list out. I like good food, good movies, good music, happy people, kindhearted people, sunny days, rainy days and sleeping. Why I joined MACS? The sincerity and simplicity of this club was what attracted me. The cards are given directly and exclusively to one kid, not like a huge charity where you donate money, not knowing where the money goes to exactly. This club makes me happy because the kids are happy, and being able to make them smile is the best feeling. You feel accomplished. It is important for me to be in a club like this because it helps me become a better person. Since I’ve only joined MACS this year, I’ve only made cards, helped with the international fair and helped with the workshops, and I wish to do more in the future.

I’m currently a sophomore. I joined MACS after I watched the promotional video during assembly because I would love to make a child smile. I’ve been writing letters in MACS and went to an orphanage trip, and I really want to go again except that it keeps conflicting with my other schedules but I would love to go every chance I have! I like the orphanage trips part about MACS, I used to go help out in the orphanage every week in 6th grade until they wouldn’t let us. I’ve been wanting to go again, so yeah, that’s what I like about this club. J

Kate Zheng Member

My name is Kate Zheng and I am a sophomore. I like sports and music :D I play volleyball, softball, and the violin, and I love reading in my free time. I wanted to join a club that allowed me to help those less fortunate than me, and I've also never done this kind of thing before, so it's a nice new experience :) I'm new this year, so I haven't really done much just yet. But I hope to help out with the upcoming concert, since I'm part of YML as well. I like the letters because they are cute!

I’m a junior in SAS and I like to cook. My favorite books are the Harry Potter series and my favorite thing to do while procrastinating is to go on Tumblr. I’m super friendly, though sometimes I can be overly friendly and come off as a bit quirky. My birthday is smack in the middle of July, so my horoscope is cancer. My favorite color is yellow, favorite fruits are blueberries, strawberries, and tangerines.  I’m a “craftist,” which means a crafter + artist. Have a nice day!
Why I’m in Make a Child Smile - I’ll admit, children aren’t really my thing, because as cute as they are, they also come with huge responsibilities, not to mention, kids don’t really like me. However, I joined because (apart from my friends all being in the club) I really like the idea of making children smile and one of the ways we do it in the club is to write letters. These letters go to kids in America who have terminal illness and as a firm believer of “love knows no boundaries,” this spread of love is really thoughtful and fun. I also get to craft those cards, which is something I love to do.
What have I done so far - I have written letters, attend meetings, but I have yet to visit the orphanage, which I will change in the near future.

Hi, my name is Sabrina. I’m a freshman at SAS high school. Outside of school, I like to write, read, doodle, watch movies and play pieces on the piano. I joined MACS at the beginning of this semester because I really wanted to be able to help kids and in different ways. I thought that writing letters to kids, even if they can’t reply them, is really a way to bring happiness for them, as I can show that I care for them. Since joining MACS, I’ve written two letters, made Valentine cards and a postcard. I love how MACS is able to give me a sense of fulfillment through helping others in our activities, I can’t wait to go on my first orphanage trip!

Hello, I’m Jules and I’m a freshman from Manila and Taiwan. I enjoy reading, watching movies, yoga, swimming, drawing, friends and outdoor activities such as hiking. I also love chocolate. (: I have a kitten and 4 turtles. I joined Make A Child Smile at first because it’s simple and it involves helping and interacting with children (I love them!). So far in Make A Child Smile, I have written monthly letters, attended 2 workshops and been on one orphanage trip. Make A Child Smile actually makes me feel we are making a difference as we all know where the letters go to, where the money goes and are taking direct action in making children smile ourselves by going to orphanages and writing letters. I also love the cozy and enthusiastic atmosphere and all the people in this club are naturally dedicated. (: The background music in the workshops is really cool and fun.

Sharon Choi Member

Hi I’m Sharon and I’m a junior. I like art, food, music, nice people, summer and smiles. I joined MACS because I really liked the idea of writing letters to those who are suffering in cancer. I really like the simplicity of this club and the idea that doing so little such as writing letters can have such an impact on people across the globe. So far I have contributed in workshops and wrote creative letters each month for this club. Also I have attended one orphanage trip, which taught me a lot about how blessed I am and how just by visiting the children we can make their day. One thing I like about this club is how we always have workshops that correspond to different holidays. I really liked our Valentines Day workshop! It was a nice way for the club members to bond.

Savannah Wu Member

Hey, I’m Savannah Wu and I’m a sophomore. I love art, photography, film, music, cookies, sleeping, and travelling. I joined MACS because I always thought there was something special about making someone smile. I’ve been to an orphanage trip and witnessed the disarming, happy quality of children that we often overlook or forget. I hope I can go to more trips in the future and help make a difference in other peoples’ lives, or at the least brighten up someone’s day with a smile.

Hi! My name is Valerie, and I'm a sophomore. I love food, traveling, books, fashion, dark chocolate, and music. To be honest, kids hate me. I don't know why, because I love them and think they are freaking adorable, and that's why I joined MACS! Also, I love to just generally make people smile because that means that I made them feel happy, and that makes me feel happy. What I love about MACS is that there are just so many good vibes that just, like, radiate from this club. I think this has something to do with the officers, who are all really nice, positive people, and the fact that we're all coming together with the single goal of making people feel happy and that they're worth something, and that reminds me of rainbows and sunshine and other nice warm fuzzy feelings. I've only just joined MACS this year, so I've been to all the meetings, written letters, helped out during International Fair, and been to the orphanage, but I'm really hoping that I'll be able to do more for the club in the future.

Hi! I’m Fyn and I’m a junior this year at SAS. MACS is my favorite club in SAS because we really make children smile. :) The monthly letter writing and the workshops to enhance our crafts is a big aspect of the club. They are very interesting, and they really get us in the mood of the monthly theme. My favorite part of the club is definitely the orphanage visits. Unlike most of the clubs at SAS, we actually get to have direct contact with the kids we are raising money for. They never fail to put a smile on my face with their positive attitudes and smiles! I get to bond with them, and there are a few kids whom I share a special bond with. I always look forward to orphanage visits and even went there on Christmas day to bring them presents and joy. I really enjoy the activities MACS offer and am really proud of be a member of this club! :)

Hii my name is Alison and I’m a junior. I like playing sports and eating. I have written letters to kids of different ages and the reason I joined was because I hope to spread warmth and smiles to these children as well as earn hours at the same time. I like how we are able to choose different people to write to, and how we can write freestyle (:

Jocelyn Hung Member

My name is Jocelyn Hung. I visited the orphanage twice this year! I love the kids there, even though they are crazy, they are crazy cute as well (: I admire the kids there because they have so little, yet they thrive and hang on to life. They are the strongest group of kids I have ever seen, and I mean both mentally and physically! They kick people real hard (yes, they kicked me), and they also leave an unforgettable impressions in people. My heart warms up after visiting them, and my day brightens when writing the letters. Sometimes, I feel like I am more excited than the kids who will receive my letters. I am glad I joined MACs, and hope to contribute more. When I feel like I have wasted my life, I think of the kids who I made smile (or at least attempted to). I am willing to spend an hour, or even more, on a letter if it is going to bring an innocent smile to a kid's face. Even if he or she is on the other half of the globe. We live on the same Earth, same soil, let us continue to live with compassion, sympathy and courage, and bring those qualities to others (:

Sophie Wang Member

Hello, my name is Sophie and I am a junior. I like to draw, swim, and eat. I joined Make a Child Smile because I enjoy writing letters to kids around the world and to visit orphanages as well as for hours. I have just joined MACS so I am a new member. But, so far in this club I have written 2 letters and one postcard and have visited the orphanage. One thing I like about MACS is we get to do little crafts and letters to kids around the world this makes the letter we write more special and personal to the kid.

Audrey Chen Member

Hi, I'm Audrey, and a freshman at SAS. Some of my hobbies/interests outside of school include: reading, photography, baking, eating, and watching Modern Family and HIMYM. I joined Make a Child Smile because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of kids just like us, and I loved the fact that this club gives members the opportunity to directly help others in need. Also, the simplicity of the club encouraged me to join; I like knowing how I help, and though writing letters may not seem like much, I enjoy imagining a child's face once they receive a letter or colorful postcard. I'm new to this club this semester, so I haven't done much yet, but I'm really look forward to visiting the orphanage for the first time next week!

Nichole Chai Member

I’m Nicole and I’m currently a sophomore. I like reading, anything that’s green tea flavored, cool people, going to new places, and the SATs (lol just kidding). I initially joined MACS because after hearing the club name, I thought it was an interesting and unique aim for a club. After going to the first meeting this year, I was hooked and have been a dedicated member ever since. So far, I’ve written letters, worked shifts in the international fair, gone to workshops and visited the orphanage. I hope to contribute more in the future, for example the concert MACS will be hosting. I feel like MACS is one of the clubs I’m in that is most productive; I feel like I’m actually making a difference with all the activities we do. It also means that all the officers and the members are very dedicated, and that makes me glad to be a part this club :)

My name is You Ji and I am from Korea. This is my first year in Make A Child Smile, and I really enjoy being in the club. I joined the club, as I wanted to give hope to a lot of children around the world, and to make them smile. Through this club, I wish I could help more children and transfer my optimism to them. (:

Hi, my name is Anna Kono and I like making art, animals, reading and travellin
g. I recently joined MACS, which was about less than a month ago. The reasons
for why I chose this club is quite complicated; to be at least in one club to expand my school reputation, educational purposes, etc. but most importantly, I wanted to be part of a group that deals with making people 'smile' and doing all sorts of things that would cheer them up, thanks to one of my friends who introduced MACS to me. Having art as my no. 1 hobby, I just loved making postcards for children and I am really looking forward to all the creative activities we are all about to work on. MACS is non-competitive nor something you have to be a pro at - its a club where you get to have fun and do something worthy that helps people.

Michael Fang Member

My Name is Michael Fang, and I am a junior this year. I enjoy playing basketball and listening to my music. I joined MACS because I was looking for an opportunity to give back to the community, and help those who are not as fortunate as me. I wanted to find a way to help those people and give them something to smile about. So far, I haven’t done much in the club, but I have been on one trip to the orphanage and it has started to change me already. I enjoy being able to see the kids play and enjoy the smiles on their faces, that it makes me always want to come back.

Hi, I am Min Young, and I am currently a sophomore. I like to dance, swim, play the violin, and eat and sleep! I joined MACS because I wanted a way to share my amazing experiences as a teenager in the prestigious Shanghai American School and to share my happiness with people who are less fortunate. Although I am not a great fan of little kids, I joined MACS because it is a great chance for me to return to society what I have received so far, and also gives me a chance to develop a connection between little children and me.  I have been on an orphanage trip as a member of this club, and I was amazed at how exciting it was to not only play with a child, but also to make a child smile! Although I have only recently joined this club, I am planning to make more children smile by going on more orphanage trips and writing more encouraging letters to those children in need.

Hello, I’m Vicky and I am currently a junior. I like running, eating, tanning, and laughing. I joined MACS because I think it is really interesting to simply write a letter and be able to put a smile on children suffering certain illnesses across the world. So far I’ve written letters for children every month, participated in workshops and went to one orphanage trip. I really like MACS because it is so easy to bring smiles on peoples faces. I really liked my first trip to the orphanage where I got to play and feed the children, and looking at their innocent smile makes me smile too! (:

Hi, I’m Ines Lee and I’m a sophomore from Hong Kong. I like food, music, watching movies, happy people, and sleeping. I joined MACS because I really liked the idea of spreading joy to people around the world. Seeing little kids struggle merely to survive at such a young age is heartbreaking, and I like the idea of writing letters to make them smile. I went to the valentine’s workshop where we made crafts and cards for the kids. I also attended an orphanage trip and I really liked how we got to play with the kids and to see them so happy. I hope I get to contribute more to this club in the future to help make more children smile J

Hi, my name is Valerie and I’m a freshman at SAS. I like anything cute, such as puppies and kittens, and every animal that is not an insect or some deep-sea creature. However, I do not like being in nature itself, because I’m your stereotypical city person. My favorite dessert is a molten chocolate cake/lava cake, which, sadly, I cannot bake. (Don’t judge me, amateur Masterchefs can’t bake them either. I watched that episode.) I joined MACS because I felt like it was one of the more organized, efficient clubs where you could see the impact of your efforts immediately. I’m one of the new members in MACS, therefore so far I have only written one postcard. (This will change soon, I promise!) My favorite thing about MACS is reading the profiles of the kids we will write to, because I feel like I’m making new friends.

Hi, my name is Jenny and I’m a freshman at SAS. I enjoy sleeping, reading, watching anime and playing some easy sports such as badminton. I joined the club at the beginning of the second semester so I’m new to this club, I did this because I really like helping children those are less fortunate than me, and I want to be able to make them smile. Also, I want to make fill my spare time with some meaningful things instead of just sit in front of my laptop. Since I am one of the new members, I haven’t done anything great so far, but I promise I will participate more in the future. One thing I like about MACS the most is the idea of writing postcards and making little crafts to those kids, because this shows that we care about them☺.

<--- Here's a photo of me with my fellow co-president and faithful friend, Yeon Jae after the Amazing Grace Concert. (>.<) I have been in Make A Child Smile since its first year in 2010 and it has been wonderful to see the club change and grow. :) I have grown a lot since—all by grace and undeserved blessing.

So my interests are…um…plants…chocolate (though I really need to eat less of that)…and of course being with little kids.

My biggest dream for the club is that each and every member will learn to humbly and selflessly serve others. There is so much need in the world, whether in Shanghai or abroad, and our club is like a drop in the bucket. However, even towering oak trees start out as little seeds. The seed is sown, and we have faith that it will grow :D

Smile!
